Try the following fun games for Self-Control:
Freeze Dance No materials needed for this game! In an open space, play music. Child(ren) will dance while the music plays, and when the music stops, child(ren) will freeze! If you want to add a layer of difficulty, when child(ren) freeze, have them strike a yoga pose.
Red Light Green Light This is another game that doesn’t require any materials! Child(ren) stand on one side of the space. The leader stands on the other side of the space. When the leader says, “Green light,” child(ren) may begin moving forward toward the leader. When the leader says, “Red light,” child(ren) must freeze. Add a level of difficulty by changing the required movements – child(ren) could hop, crab walk, or bear crawl on a green light!
Statue For this game, the leader stands on one side of the room and the child(ren) stand on the other. The leader turns their back to the child(ren). The chid(ren) begins silently moving toward the leader. The leader can then turn around, but when the leader turns around, the child(ren) must freeze in a statue position and hold it until the leader turns around again! Anyone the leader sees moving is out of the game.
Mirror Work in pairs if possible or a designated person be the leader. In pairs: one person will be the leader and the other the mirror. In group: one person will be the leader and the child(ren) will be the mirror. Those that are the mirror will mimic the leader's movements, including facial expressions just as if they were a mirror. Children need to pay close attention and be aware of their body movements!
